Meet the team: Gary Minton, Operations Manager
Meet Gary Minton, Operations Manager at Thermatic Energy Services – if you ask anyone what Gary’s greatest strength is they will tell you ‘he gets stuff done!’
We sat down with Gary Minton to get an insight into what a typical day looks like, how he started his career and much more.
Are there any moments in your career, past or present, that stand out to you?
This would be my decision to take up an opportunity to work in the Industrial & Commercial sector for energy. Due to this, I pushed myself to learn everything to do with Half Hourly meters, flexible procurement & large Gas meters. Without this, I would not be in the position I am now and have the great contacts in the Energy Industry who I need to thank for all the help they have given me.
What kind of skills do you need to be effective in your role?
As this is a new role enthusiasm is key, putting clients first and making a difference for them is a major part of my role. Also being very organised with a keen eye for detail is important. Being approachable so customers and my colleagues can come to me with anything
Can you tell us about a typical working day for you?
A typical working day for me right now is working very closely with my Managing Director Jen Johnson, Head of TEC Dean Walsh and my TEC technician Ellie. I have to say the welcome I have had is brilliant and working with them and the rest of the team has helped me learn what Thermatic Energy is all about.
Where do you see Thermatic Energy Services in 5 years?
In five years I can see us being a major player in the Energy industry, being the number one energy services company, especially in the retail sector. Winning awards for the services and help we provide to our clients. Thermatic Energy has the potential to keep growing and growing.
Can you tell us about the hardest moment in your career and how you overcame it?
During the Covid 19 pandemic, I was still working from the office in my previous role, I got one of the worst calls I have ever received. My father called to say he has cancer; I hadn’t seen my dad properly at this moment for a few months and due to this I couldn’t see him or my mother at all. I was lost with what to do and whilst this was going on I was still going in the office to run everything like normal. I overcame this with the support from my wife and from seeing the strength in my dad to fight this. I am overjoyed to say my dad won this battle and has now been declared cancer-free!
Thermatic’s culture is at the heart of the business – can you describe what the culture means to you?
Our culture is what makes us stand out as a company and it’s something I feel strongly about making sure that we carry on the show with all our customers.
Do you have any advice for people who want to work in the industry?
The main advice I can give is to learn from the people you work with and connect with people in the industry. I went from sales to an operations manager by doing this.
What do you love most about your job?
Connecting with the different types of people and always learning about new ways we can help our customers.
Finally, if there was one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be?
Stay strong and never give up, life can be hard, but it can be so rewarding.
